Dr. Patrick J. Marino — known to friends as Pat — passed away on July 6, 2026, in Red Bank, New Jersey, at the age of 93.
Pat was born on December 4, 1932, in Queens, New York, to John and Rose Marino. The son of a carpenter, he grew up with the belief that anything could be built, fixed, or understood if you were willing to work at it — a belief that carried him through the rest of his life. He served in the United States Navy as an electrical engineer aboard aircraft carriers, responsible for radar and weapons systems for naval aircraft, an experience that set the course for the extraordinary education and career that followed.
Pat went on to earn his B.E.E. and M.E.E. from New York University, where he received the Gernsback Award and the Founders’ Award for Scholarship and was elected to Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. He later studied theoretical physics at the Courant Institute and earned his Doctorate in Systems Theory as a Bell Labs Fellow at Oxford University in 1965.
Pat spent his career at the forefront of telecommunications — first at Bell Labs and AT&T, where his work spanned digital switching systems, engineering, and regulatory affairs, and later as a founder and consultant across several telecommunications firms, including decades as an instructor for the AT&T School of Business. He held multiple patents for his work in data communications and switching technology.
For all he built and achieved, Pat would say that what mattered most was his family and his faith. He married the love of his life, Alberta, in September 1969, and their bond — rooted in that shared faith — never wavered. He was the best of friends and a true gentleman, equally at home quietly working through a math problem for the pleasure of it, out on the tennis court, or admiring a fine car, and his devotion to his wife and family spoke louder than anything he ever said.
Pat is survived by his wife, Alberta; his daughter, Stacey McColgan, and her husband, Kevin; his son, Wayne Marino, and his wife, Min; his grandchildren, Tyler and Sadie; and his sisters, Madeline Nelson and Dolores Massa.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 10, at 10:30 AM at St. Catharine’s Church in Holmdel, New Jersey, followed by entombment at Holmdel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Pat’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
