Peter F. Burnham, 76, of Tinton Falls, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 27th at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Born in New London, CT, Peter was raised in Collingswood, NJ. A 1962 graduate of Bishop Eustace High School in Pennsauken, NJ, he received his B.A. from St. Francis College in Loretto, PA, and a Master’s degree from the University of Dayton. Peter received his PhD from the Catholic University of America.
Peter was a nationally known leader in the community college world. He spent his entire professional career working in community colleges, beginning at Prince George’s CC in Landover, MD where he was a professor and textbook author. He moved to administration when he became Academic Dean at Tompkins Cortland CC (TC3) in Dryden, NY. Peter was named the youngest President in the SUNY system in 1984 when he was inaugurated as the President of the Schenectady County CC in Schenectady, NY. Peter and his family moved to Monmouth County in 1991 where he was named the President of Brookdale CC in Lincroft, NJ. Peter’s tenure at Brookdale was associated with a period of great growth, expansion, and the start of the Communiversity.
Peter enjoyed playing golf, reading, and restoring antique cars. He was an avid baseball fan, and supported the Yankees and the Phillies. Family was most important to Peter, who organized many memorable family vacations. He was especially fond of Sea Isle City and Block Island.
His is survived by his beloved wife Victoria; his children Kristine (Nathan) Marceca, David Burnham, and William Burnham; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Christopher and Kelly Burnham and Jon and Tori Burnham; his nephews Thomas (Tingting) Burnham and Charles T. Burnham; his aunt Constance O’Brien; his grandchildren Samantha, Evelyn and Vivian Marceca; as well as his canine friend, Dakota.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Penny (Ann) and Charles Burnham; his aunt and uncle, Milton and Evelyn Wallace; his uncle, Francis Burnham; and his in-laws, Edward and Mary Dziadul.
To honor Peter’s legacy of public service and providing opportunities for higher education, his family will be organizing a scholarship in his name. He served as Chairman of the Exploring Division of the Schenectady Council,BSA and we worked together in helping high school students to learn about different careers. My husband, Eldon Baldwin, and I began working with Peter in the early 70s at Prince George's Community College. Peter was in developmental English, Eldon was developmental math, and I was a counselor. We were young, idealistic, and passionate about the Community College Mission! Through the many years of challenges, obstacles, successes, failures, and changes, our friendship endured. When Peter left PGCC, we lost touch for a couple of decades while focusing on careers and children. In 2004, we reconnected at a conference and basically picked up where we left off. Peter was empathetic, compassionate,encouraging and unfailingly helpful. He gave me lots of advice on the Community College Mission, governance, Middle States procedures, student success, faculty relationships, personal issues, etc. We had enlightening arguments!
He loved his family and friends so much. I will miss him and remember him fondly. May he rest in peace.

Peter's untimely passing is an incalculable loss for his beloved, Vicky, and his entire world of family and friends. I am one of those friends and was privileged to be the President of the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale CC when Peter arrived in 1991. Even before his official start date, Peter came to the Center's annual dinner and expressed his deep support of our mission. As President of the college he challenged the Center, then entirely operated by volunteers in a small corner of the college library, to think and plan strategically. As a result, the our Board developed a 5 year plan that we called our "Dream Sheet". We did not think it truly possible to have a paid staff or grow significantly. But Peter inspired us to do what we thought impossible. Now, almost 30 years later, we are the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education ("Chhange"). Chhange is now an independent 501(c)3 organization, with an Executive Director who has a national and even international reputation in the field of Holocaust, genocide and human rights, paid staff to assist her and hundred's of volunteer worker bees. It is located in a significant portion of the Bankier Library, has a world-class permanent exhibit and it's own library and archives. It provides dozens of programs and services to the educational and general community locally and around the world, reaching well over 25,000 people each year. Peter's sincere, inspirational and dedicated leadership provided the fertile soil for Chhange to grow and thrive. Of his many worthy achievements in his too short life, Chhange will be one of many ongoing testaments to his time among the living.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I crossed paths with Dr. Burnham in Schenectady,NY. He served as Chairman of the Exploring Division of the Schenectady Council,BSA and we worked together in helping high school students to learn about different careers. Many meetings were held in his SCCC office and he was always supportive of the programs and me personally. He most certainly was as asset to the Schenectady community in many ways.

My husband, Eldon Baldwin, and I began working with Peter in the early 70s at Prince George's Community College. Peter was in developmental English, Eldon was developmental math, and I was a counselor. We were young, idealistic, and passionate about the Community College Mission! Through the many years of challenges, obstacles, successes, failures, and changes, our friendship endured. When Peter left PGCC, we lost touch for a couple of decades while focusing on careers and children. In 2004, we reconnected at a conference and basically picked up where we left off. Peter was empathetic, compassionate,encouraging and unfailingly helpful. He gave me lots of advice on the Community College Mission, governance, Middle States procedures, student success, faculty relationships, personal issues, etc. We had enlightening arguments!
He loved his family and friends so much. I will miss him and remember him fondly. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Burnham left a lasting legacy at Brookdale Community College, one that will never be equaled. I can't thank him enough for all he did for me personally and for the all students at Brookdale for so many years. He was a great man who cared deeply about everyone. He created a family atmosphere at Brookdale that was real, not just because it sounded good--we really were one big, at rare times dysfunctional, but always loving family--and we really got things done--we all did great things under his leadership as President. He brought our college into the 21st Century--he made us a national leader among community colleges. And he also made it such a pleasure to work at Brookdale. Peter's untimely passing is an incalculable loss for his beloved, Vicky, and his entire world of family and friends. I am one of those friends and was privileged to be the President of the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale CC when Peter arrived in 1991. Even before his official start date, Peter came to the Center's annual dinner and expressed his deep support of our mission. As President of the college he challenged the Center, then entirely operated by volunteers in a small corner of the college library, to think and plan strategically. As a result, the our Board developed a 5 year plan that we called our "Dream Sheet". We did not think it truly possible to have a paid staff or grow significantly. But Peter inspired us to do what we thought impossible. Now, almost 30 years later, we are the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education ("Chhange"). Chhange is now an independent 501(c)3 organization, with an Executive Director who has a national and even international reputation in the field of Holocaust, genocide and human rights, paid staff to assist her and hundred's of volunteer worker bees. It is located in a significant portion of the Bankier Library, has a world-class permanent exhibit and it's own library and archives. It provides dozens of programs and services to the educational and general community locally and around the world, reaching well over 25,000 people each year. Peter's sincere, inspirational and dedicated leadership provided the fertile soil for Chhange to grow and thrive. Of his many worthy achievements in his too short life, Chhange will be one of many ongoing testaments to his time among the living.

In my 40 years in higher education, no leader I’ve worked for or with had more vision or wrote as well as Peter did. When he spoke (without a note in front him), you understood why colleagues in New York nicknamed him “Golden Throat.”
He was one of the "heavy lifters" on behalf of students and community colleges, who brought out the best in all of us, and gave us our “swagger”.
Under his leadership, we cared little about what others were doing, and passionately marched to our own drummer putting STUDENTS in the forefront of all that we did. Most important, we worked hard, we played hard, laughed often and cared for one another.
As Peter walked through the pearly gates, I hope The Carpenter, with a twinkle in His eye, escorted Peter to the podium of the Administrators and Exempt Staff “A and E” Luncheon … to greet an old friend.
