So sorry to hear of your loss. I crossed paths with Dr. Burnham in Schenectady,NY. He served as Chairman of the Exploring Division of the Schenectady Council,BSA and we worked together in helping high school students to learn about different careers. Many meetings were held in his SCCC office and he was always supportive of the programs and me personally. He most certainly was as asset to the Schenectady community in many ways. Barbara Sanders left a message on November 3, 2020:
My husband, Eldon Baldwin, and I began working with Peter in the early 70s at Prince George's Community College. Peter was in developmental English, Eldon was developmental math, and I was a counselor. We were young, idealistic, and passionate about the Community College Mission! Through the many years of challenges, obstacles, successes, failures, and changes, our friendship endured. When Peter left PGCC, we lost touch for a couple of decades while focusing on careers and children. In 2004, we reconnected at a conference and basically picked up where we left off. Peter was empathetic, compassionate, encouraging and unfailingly helpful. He gave me lots of advice on the Community College Mission, governance, Middle States procedures, student success, faculty relationships, personal issues, etc. We had enlightening arguments! He loved his family and friends so much. I will miss him and remember him fondly. May he rest in peace.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Karen and extend our heartfelt condolences to Vicky, David and Bill. Peter was extraordinary in every way. Most of all he was a loyal friend and colleague. He was a visionary leader of community colleges in New Jersey, the Middle States region and nationally. Peter was the only community college president to serve on a four college president committee to craft the future of the governance of Higher Education in New Jersey, and was the first community college President to chair the New Jersey Presidents' Council. Peter was dedicated to his family and an avid golfer. He had an infectious laugh, and will always be remembered as a true friend. It is my hope that Vicky, David and Bill will find solace in the many fine memories that I know they have. RIP my friend. Ed Yaw

Dear Vicky and Family, Our deepest condolences on the passing of Peter. He was a devoted husband and family man who loved life with a deep passion. I had known Peter for many years as a colleague and friend. We crossed paths in New York at two different community colleges and were presidents at two adjoining counties. Peter loved to debate any topic with a sense of humor and fairness. He did wonderful things for the community colleges including Brookdale which was one of the best in the country. He was always concerned about the students and how a good and affordable education would enrich their lives. He taught me how to play golf when I first started to take up the game with great patience since I was terrible at it. He will be missed. God bless you Peter.
Marc David Bonagura left a message on October 31, 2020:
Dr. Burnham left a lasting legacy at Brookdale Community College, one that will never be equaled. I can't thank him enough for all he did for me personally and for the all students at Brookdale for so many years. He was a great man who cared deeply about everyone. He created a family atmosphere at Brookdale that was real, not just because it sounded good--we really were one big, at rare times dysfunctional, but always loving family--and we really got things done--we all did great things under his leadership as President. He brought our college into the 21st Century--he made us a national leader among community colleges. And he also made it such a pleasure to work at Brookdale. I hope he will always be thought of kindly and with love in hearts of all the people's lives he touched at Brookdale and beyond. I hope that his goodness will be what people remember about him and that he cared so deeply about everyone and spent his entire career helping others to make a better life!

Paul E. Zigo left a message on October 30, 2020:
Peter's passing is truly very sad news. He was a dedicated President when at Brookdale Community College and will be remembered in particular for one grand achievement, that being making Monmouth County, NJ, Brookdale's campus. Peter moved the College and its programs and services beyond Lincroft via the establishment of extension sites, community learning centers, and branch campuses. Without his dedication to this effort, Brookdale would never have been recognized as one of the best community colleges within the USA. God bless you Peter Burnham.

Peter's untimely passing is an incalculable loss for his beloved, Vicky, and his entire world of family and friends. I am one of those friends and was privileged to be the President of the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale CC when Peter arrived in 1991. Even before his official start date, Peter came to the Center's annual dinner and expressed his deep support of our mission. As President of the college he challenged the Center, then entirely operated by volunteers in a small corner of the college library, to think and plan strategically. As a result, the our Board developed a 5 year plan that we called our "Dream Sheet". We did not think it truly possible to have a paid staff or grow significantly. But Peter inspired us to do what we thought impossible. Now, almost 30 years later, we are the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education ("Chhange"). Chhange is now an independent 501(c)3 organization, with an Executive Director who has a national and even international reputation in the field of Holocaust, genocide and human rights, paid staff to assist her and hundred's of volunteer worker bees. It is located in a significant portion of the Bankier Library, has a world-class permanent exhibit and it's own library and archives. It provides dozens of programs and services to the educational and general community locally and around the world, reaching well over 25,000 people each year. Peter's sincere, inspirational and dedicated leadership provided the fertile soil for Chhange to grow and thrive. Of his many worthy achievements in his too short life, Chhange will be one of many ongoing testaments to his time among the living.

Michael J. Bennett left a message on October 29, 2020:
Vicky, David, Billy and family, Rita and I send our deepest condolences. In my 40 years in higher education, no leader I’ve worked for or with had more vision or wrote as well as Peter did. When he spoke (without a note in front him), you understood why colleagues in New York nicknamed him “Golden Throat.” He was one of the "heavy lifters" on behalf of students and community colleges, who brought out the best in all of us, and gave us our “swagger”. Under his leadership, we cared little about what others were doing, and passionately marched to our own drummer putting STUDENTS in the forefront of all that we did. Most important, we worked hard, we played hard, laughed often and cared for one another. As Peter walked through the pearly gates, I hope The Carpenter, with a twinkle in His eye, escorted Peter to the podium of the Administrators and Exempt Staff “A and E” Luncheon … to greet an old friend. It was an honor to work with him. Michael J. Bennett

As so many have said, Peter was an educational leader with great vision (I often remarked so to my BCC classes), a willingness to listen (especially in his office while we discussed the College Hours intently) despite an unrelenting drive to accomplish his "missions", possessed of an interesting and sometimes a little quirky sense of humor often displayed at our Winter Festival, backed up two brand new hirers (Le Vine and Hartzell) when some people tried to take that away from us, and, shot me one of his famous wry smiles when I once called him "Pete". Prayers to the family, especially my former Native American studies first class ever student, Vicky.
