Rocco A. Ferranti, 75, died peacefully on October 5, 2023 after a courageous fight against Lewy Body Dementia. He is survived by his cherished and devoted wife of 49 years, Elizabeth; his daughter Kathryn; son William; daughter-in-law Amy; grandchildren Violet and Rocco; his sisters Roseann and Joanna and their families; and many treasured cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends from all phases of life. We know he is delighted to be reunited with his parents who he missed very much, Will and Pauline, and his beloved coach, Jim Beaudry.
Born on November 24, 1947, Rocco had a happy, family-filled childhood in Brooklyn, NY, and grew up playing on the neighborhood basketball courts. That city kid then headed to rural Maine, where he played basketball for St. Francis College (now the University of New England), scoring his 1,000th career point on January 11, 1970. Rocco is the sole St. Francis player to have his number retired, and he was inducted into the UNE Hall of Fame in 2015.
After college, he returned to New York, where he worked as a physical education teacher and coach at Bishop Ford High School and married Betty. Katie and Will arrived soon thereafter, and he described their early childhood years as his favorite time of life. He subsequently lived in the Bronx, and then in Bergen and Monmouth Counties, NJ, working for Stella D’oro Biscuit Co., and as a high school basketball coach and referee. Rocco loved the outdoors, spending time with his family, his childhood summers in the country with his cousins, a cold beer, a silly joke, funny television and movies, a round of golf with friends, a swim in the ocean and Sunday sauce and meatballs. He was a gentle, kind, and generous man, a wonderful husband and the greatest of fathers. He will be deeply missed.
Rocco’s family wishes to thank the caregivers, nurses and hospice aides who have provided care and support over the past two years. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (lbda.org) are welcome. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2023 from 3 to 7 pm at Holmdel Funeral Home in Holmdel, NJ and a Mass of Resurrection on Monday, October 9, 2023 at 10 am at The Parish of Saint Mary in Colts Neck, NJ.
