Salvatore Michael Marino, 84, of Waretown, passed away Wednesday surrounded by his family.
Sal was born and raised in Staten Island, NY. He attended St. John Villa Grammar School and St. Peters Boys High School. He met the love of his life, Frances, as they were riding a bus on their way to St. Peter’s Girls/Boys High School. Sal attended the University of Dayton for one year. Upon returning home he married Fran in 1963 and they remained in Staten Island to raise their family. He began his career on Wall Street at Dillion Reed while finishing his college education at Pace University, attending early bird and night classes after work. When he graduated from Pace, all his young children were in attendance. Sal’s career eventually led him to Solomon Brothers where he worked his way up to Vice President of International Operations, a position he held through retirement. Throughout grammar and high school Sal worked after school and on weekends as a part of his family business, Marino Food Products importing from Italy to restaurants throughout NYC, Staten Island, Brooklyn and NJ. He continued to work on weekends during college and while raising a young family.
In addition to raising a family, Sal and Fran were able to travel the world, including touring in London, Japan, skiing in Zurich and numerous trips throughout Italy. For 40 years, they also enjoyed their second home in Wild Acres-Poconos, skiing and snowmobiling in the winters and enjoying tennis, golf, volleyball, and rafting on the Delaware River in the summers with both friends and family. Sal and Fran ultimately sold their home in New Dorp, and retired to Green Briar in Waretown, NJ. During their 16 plus years in Green Briar, they enjoyed golf, bocci, and bowling. Sal was very active in the Italian American & Men’s clubs where he made fast friends and was loved by all who met him. He was a true gentleman.
Sal is predeceased by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Frances; and his siblings Christine Russo and Maryann Anderson. He is survived by his children Lisa Loshiavo (and her husband Rick), Marc Marino (and his wife Kim), Michele Gilbert (and her husband Tim), and his beloved grandchildren Lauren, Jenny (his “birthday buddy”), Salvatore, Jenna, Meghan, and Brendan who loved their “Pop-pop” dearly and by his cousins Frank Marino, Sal Marino, Peter Marino and Marie (Sissy) DiMarzio, who he considered siblings and nieces Carmela Stewart and Kathleen Beck along with their families who he loved dearly.
