Thomas Alan Mion, of Cranberry Township, passed away on March 27, 2026. “Grásta ó Dhia ar a anam dílis.” (May God’s grace bless his loyal soul.)
Tom was known by many as a gentle giant and a true gentleman. One can imagine him now in heaven, busy rigging the Landfall for a day of sailing, alongside his parents—both undoubtedly offering directions at the same time.
He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, to the late Louis A. Mion and Julia Wolcott Mion.
As a boy growing up in Long Branch, Tom was active in the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Life Scout. He was a charter member of the Long Branch Junior Chamber of Commerce, a former Captain of the Port-au-Peck Chemical Hose Company, and a former Lieutenant in the Oceanport First Aid Squad. He also served as a football official in Monmouth and Ocean Counties and was a longtime member of the Long Branch Ice Boat and Yacht Club, joining at the age of fourteen.
Tom and his father won the Class “B” Eastern Ice Boat and Yacht Club Championship five times. He also raced boats competitively with close friends and was a member of the American Power Boat Association, racing both outboards and inboards. He was a past president of the Long Branch Rotary Club and had a deep and enduring love for Ireland. A dedicated member of Daltaí na Gaeilge, he never stopped studying the Irish language.
Tom graduated from Long Branch High School, Class of 1955, and attended Franklin & Marshall College, Class of 1959. He also pursued extensive studies and earned degrees and certifications in Business Administration, Accounting, Psychology, Sociology, Social Psychology, Criminal Justice, Police Science, and Public Administration and Management through programs at brokerage school in New York, Rutgers University, Ocean County College, Monmouth University, and Brookdale Community College.
Tom met his beloved wife, Mary, as a teenager at the North Long Branch beach. They were married on July 5, 1958, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, laughter, and countless good times with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Lisa Mion (Lisa Shasky) of South Carolina and Jennifer Mion Chrobak (Steven) of Pennsylvania; and his cherished granddaughters, Julia and Grace, whom he adored. He is also survived by his lifelong friend, Tony Britton and his wife Tinker; his sister-in-law Catherine Daudier of Maine; his brother-in-law Michael Fleming of Virginia; his sister-in-law Karen Fleming of Pennsylvania; several cousins; and his nieces and nephews.
Tom began his professional career managing Esso service stations before joining the brokerage firm O’Brien and Sullivan in Asbury Park. He later entered law enforcement as a patrolman with the Oceanport Police Department. After five years, he joined the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, where he built a distinguished career in investigations, ultimately rising to Captain of Special Investigations. He worked in collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, as well as agencies in other states.
In 1989, he was appointed Director of Administration for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, serving in that role until his retirement in 1999.
Even in retirement, Tom remained committed to serving others. Alongside his wife, he volunteered as a reading mentor in the Long Branch school system. In 1990, he was appointed by the Attorney General and Assignment Judge Lawson, with approval from Prosecutor Kaye, to serve as a Municipal Mediator for the Borough of Oceanport, a role he held until relocating to Pennsylvania.
After moving to Sherwood Oaks, Tom and Mary embraced their new community, forming lasting friendships and participating actively in community life and activities.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Skilled Nursing Section at Sherwood Oaks for the exceptional care and compassion they provided. His daily “Top of the Morning” greeting will be deeply missed.
Tom was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Long Branch for over 50 years and most recently attended St. Ferdinand Church in Cranberry Township.
A visitation and memorial service will be held in New Jersey on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. Burial to follow in Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s memory to Daltaí na Gaeilge (Students of Irish) at daltai.com or the church of your choice.
