Veteran – U.S.Marine Corps 1953 – 1956 Thomas E. Petley, 76, of Morganville, N.J. passed away on Thursday, September 1st, 2011 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, N.Y. Thomas was born in Boston, MA.and graduated from Commerce High School in 1952. Thomas enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953, and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. until he was honorably discharged in 1956. In 1957, he began working as a night loader at United Parcel Service. He then worked as a driver for a year and a half at UPS before entering supervision in 1960, in both Operations and Delivery Information. In 1962 he became a Division Manager in the Boston area. In 1976, he was transferred to Nebraska with his family and served at the West Region’s Labor Relations Manager. In 1980 Thomas was transferred to New Jersey to serve in the capacity of District Manager. He then ultimately retired as an East New England District Manager in 1991 after a 34 year career. During his retirement Thomas shared the fruits of his achievements with his friends and family as he fulfilled his life long dream to tour and explore the world. To him, a wonder was best seen when it was enjoyed with those he loved, a testament to his character to which all who loved him can attest. With his loving smile and gentle face, no one can take his vacant place. He will be sorely missed. Thomas is survived by his loving spouse of 46 years, Eleanor R. Petley, their 3 children William, Edward, and Kimberly, 5 Grandchildren Jacob, Elise, Edward, Thomas, Ciara, one great grandchild Jacob, and beloved sister, Carol Holland. Visitation will be held Tuesday September 6th, from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 PM at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 – South Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ. A memorial service will be offered at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:30AM. Interment will then follow at the Holmdel Cemetery, Holmdel. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent in his memory to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA. 02241-7005. Mr. Petley was truly one of a kind, and I admired him greatly. I visited his home often while growing up, and whenever I did, he would always greet me with a warm smile and a handshake. He would always take time to have a conversation with me, and would have me laughing in no time. He had a terrific sense of humor, and a great outlook on life. Regardless of the particular challenge, Mr. P always seemed to handle adversity with a smile. He may have just gotten out of the O.R., but you’d never be able to tell. He didn’t want to burden anyone with his troubles. I also admired his dedication to his family. To me, he became the definition of what a family man should be, and I’ve always aspired to follow his example. I respected his integrity, intelligence, and determination. He worked very hard to achieve his success, while always remaining humble. He was kind, generous, courageous, and a class act…a rare treasure that will truly be missed. I am richer for having known him. Rest in Peace.
