The family of Virginia G. Hoffman of Holmdel is saddened to announce her passing January 24, 2022 at the age of 98.
Virginia Grace Hoffman was born in 1923 in NYC, as an only child and affectionately referred to as Baby by her parents, Robert and Virginia Drescher, lived through The Depression in Bellerose, Long Island, and graduated from Jamaica High School in 1940.
She married the love of her life Harold Hoffman and honeymooned in Niagara Falls in 1946. They lived in Plainfield, NJ before settling in Holmdel in 1966 raising two beloved and devoted sons.
Before marriage, Virginia was employed by the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company located at 92 John Street, New York City for 8 years. After marriage, Virginia worked at Teppers, Hahne, Steinbeck, and Stern’s department stores during holiday seasons.
Virginia and Harold were volunteer eye-screening workers for AT&T Telephone Pioneers. They also worked at Sandy Hook National Park as tour guides. Virginia was a member of the Holmdel Fire Company #1, Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed singing with Sweet Adeline International (Greater New York, Region 15) with her Jersey Shore Chorus for 30 years. She was also a volunteer singer for folks at Arnold Walker Nursing Home in Hazlet and Holmdel Day Care Center for 15 years. Virginia was quite the card shark participating in a neighborhood bridge group. Her granddaughter Dana kept her quite busy as one of her biggest fans always cheering Dana on in the bleachers, sidelines, and poolside often wanting to take credit for Dana’s amazing athleticism. Her grandson Douglas kept her up to date with the latest technologies from computer day trading, creating personalized cards, Face Timing on her iPhone, and providing Alexas throughout her home. Virginia and Harold enjoyed life: socializing with Harold’s Bell Labs colleagues, dancing the Lindy and Jitterbug at Elks gatherings, canoeing in the Pine Barrens, and enjoying family vacations traveling numerous times to Florida, Loon Lake, Lake George in the Adirondacks, and spending leisure weekends at the Jersey Shore. Virginia always looked forward to seeing her extended family and friends in our Chadwick Beach neighborhood.
As a loving mother, Virginia always placed her family’s needs, health, and wellness above her own. As the matriarch of the family, she always enjoyed exciting new activities with her 4 energetic great grandchildren.
August of 2021, Virginia moved into Brandywine Assisted Living at Toms River and enjoyed the last 6 months of her 98 years making new friends and participating in various social activities.
Virginia was predeceased in 2017 by her loving husband Harold. For 71 years, their lives revolved around their family. She is survived by two sons: Richard and wife Linda of Zephyr Cove, NV; John Hoffman and wife Carol of Lavallette, NJ and The Villages, FL; grandson Douglas Hoffman and wife Carolyn of Rutherford, NJ with their children Samantha Virginia and Ryan; granddaughter Dana Hoffman Bennett and husband Tyler of Colts Neck, NJ and their children Maddison and Brayden.
Virginia was a parishioner originally of St Gabriel’s Church in Marlboro and later St Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Holmdel.
Keeping everyone’s health and safety in mind, there will be a 9:00am – 10:30am viewing at St Gabriel’s Mausoleum (the Mausoleum Building in the front directly next to the Historic Church) at 549 County Rd 520, Marlboro, NJ on Monday, January 31st before a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am in the Historical St Gabriel’s Church. A brief graveside burial service behind the church will follow. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Virginia’s life at Orlando’s Italian Kitchen (look for the sign PIZZA) in Colts Neck Shopping Center, 420 Rt 34, Colts Neck, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please keep Virginia in your thoughts and prayers.
