Wai Ching Yu, 63, of Holmdel passed away surrounded by his family early Tuesday morning.
WaiChing was born in Hong Kong, and at the age of 19, he and his family immigrated to Queens, New York. He attended City College of New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) while working full-time at a famous restaurant in New York City. WaiChing excelled in academics. He graduated top of his class in the School of Engineering, and received the 1980 Engineering Alumni Award. He continued his higher education, finishing his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University.
Following school, he met the love of his life, June, and the two would marry in 1987. They would settle in Holmdel, where he started his career at Bell Labs and would eventually have two kids.
WaiChing was an avid reader, a karate black belt, loved woodwork and the outdoors, and was very involved in the Boy Scouts in his later years. He spent a lot of his time with his children, reading them bedtime stories and going camping with them. He was especially proud of participating in Philmont, an 11-day Boy Scout hiking adventure in New Mexico. Later in life, he loved vacationing with his family in Cape May, as well as watching his favorite shows on YouTube. WaiChing was well-loved by his family, friends, co-workers and fellow scouts.
WaiChing is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, June Yu of Holmdel; his children Christopher Yu and his wife Zoe Yu of Holmdel, and Nicholas Yu of Holmdel; his mother, Kiu Yu; his siblings, Raymond Yu and his wife Clara Chan, Gemma, Anita and her husband Kin Li, Maggie, and Lucy and her husband Jerry Chang.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 28 from 12:00-1:30 PM at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A service will be offered at 1:30 PM.

My earliest and fondest memory with Suk Suk was when he would teach us his karate moves and when he brined the Thanksgiving turkey so it wouldn’t be dry. I’ve many other fond memories of him such as teaching me how to play ping pong on the table in the basement. Everyone was amazed at my technique and holding the paddle the “Chinese way”.
