Dear Hammond Family: I am deeply saddened to learn of your recent loss. My father and I were long-time friends of Mr. Hammond, whom I had always known as "Sub". I am Cliff, the son of Bill Mancle, originally from Holmdel. I had lost touch with "Sub", and have been recently trying to find him and share some fond memories. I am so sorry for your loss -- you have my deepest condolences. And I am sorry that I am too late. Is there a charity to which I can contribute a gift in "Sub's" honor? To all the family and friends of 'Uncle Sub' I offer my family's deepest condolensces. I had the pleasure and the greatest memories of getting to play around what in my mind was the best farms in the world with a great group of uncles and cousins headed up by Uncle Sub. From the fields to the barn and out with the horses I have memories of great times clear to this day. Looking back I think I was dupped because now I would call it work, but with a man like Uncle Sub it was an adventure. Holmdel was idyllic then and I got to see and do things that few people would get the opportunity to do with a family that was unbelievably as unique and colorful as the towns history. My condolences goes out to my whole family. Who lost a dear, warm, loving man called Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa also Great Great Grandpa. I was Proud to call him Grandpa. I had alot of years away, but I can say I have thought of him daily. The one thing I wish I could have done before he went to Heaven is to give him a hug and say I Love You Grandpa. The memories that I did share with him will always be dear to my heart. Once being little and going to the race track where he took Pride in his horses or even going to the farm for hours to work around the stables. There were other times he would just sit and tell us silly jokes and they would make us laugh. May my prayers bring you peace and strength in this difficult time. Now he is walking with Jesus and Grandma Shirley. Love Always, Bonnie and Family

To Bill's much loved family, my hearfelt condolences. Your father was my neighbor and my friend. We first met over the top of the backyard fence, and we would stop to chat and share our thoughts on life. I believe we both just loved being outside in the fresh air for just about any reason. Your Dad's love of life, his family and his dearly missed Shirley was so evident in the stories he would relate to me over a piece of pound cake and a cup of tea on dreary or wet winter afternoons in his last years. He loved his racing days, the friends he made through racing and his travels. His aged eyes would light up and be followed by a chuckle, I adored, as he recalled his days as a younger man. I have been away from Lincroft for almost a year now and have missed my visits with your father. My last communication with him was through a Christmas card wishing him well and hoping that the New Year would be all that he hoped for. I believe the one wish Bill had for some time, his desire to be reunited with his beloved Shirley, the love of his life, has finally been realized. To Bill's family and friends: I think of the line of poetry "Good fences make good neighbors." We shared a fence for many years and so enjoyed having Bill for a neighbor. For many years our early morning schedules were perfectly timed for us to meet on Oak Street. I'd be heading home from my morning run and he'd be heading out to his horses. He varied the routine from day to day but it always involved him pretending to rev his engine and head right towards me! Between that and his funky horn it was always quite an event! As the years went by my morning routine changed as did Bill's, but I'll always remember how I enjoyed his funny start to my days. May you all find comfort in many of your own fond memories.
